The Good: The Musketeers Dethrone UConn
It’s 2023, and Sean Miller is quickly returning to the top of the college basketball world. Miller’s teams in years past have been focused mainly on defense, and then the offense would work itself out. While sitting out for the entirety of last season, Miller studied the nation’s top offensive schemes and now has Xavier sitting as the seventh highest-rated offense according to KenPom.
This offensive efficiency has helped the Musketeers off to their hot 12-3 start – including a 4-0 start in Big East play. The highlight of this hot start has to be handing no. 4 UConn their first loss of the season on Saturday.
Xavier – now sitting at no. 18 in the most recent AP poll – played their brand of basketball in order to defeat the Huskies. Miller’s offense emphasizes team play and that was on full display, as the Musketeers had five players score in double-digits and totaled 20 assists as a team.
With all this emphasis on offense, though, comes a lack of attention on the defensive side of the ball. According to KenPom, Xavier sits at no. 78 in adjusted defensive rating – a rather large gap from their top ten rating with offense. This gap also drives Coach Miller crazy, and he is surely looking for a solution because he knows that this could be something that could come to hurt them late in the season.
The Musketeers have a long break to rest before they travel to the Main Line on Saturday to face off against Villanova.
The Bad: Hurley’s Antics Hurt the Huskies
For the first time all season, the Huskies are wounded. UConn opened conference play against Georgetown, Villanova and Xavier. In those first two games, they produced their worst two offensive games of the year, but ultimately walked out with two wins on their home court.
Saturday, though, saw their streak come to an end when they traveled to a packed Cintas Center to face off against Xavier.
UConn was unable to get into the paint and utilize their big men, while they ultimately chucked up a season high 37 three-pointers (only hitting 13 of them). While offensive and defensive struggles plagued the Huskies all game, what really hurt them were once again Dan Hurley’s sideline antics.
With 2:25 left to go in the game, Hurley received a technical for allegedly saying “unbelievable!” to a foul call on Tristen Newton. This foul and technical led to a six-point Xavier advantage and basically gifted all of the momentum – and the game – to the Musketeers.
I say allegedly, though, because Dan Hurley has a history of yelling at refs and getting himself in trouble. Earlier last week when they played Villanova, Hurley called the refs “clowns” several times throughout the game. Nothing came of this, but refs have a shorter leash for outbursts.
With the Huskies said to be one of the top five teams in the country, Hurley needs to get his emotions in check, as they could seriously hurt his team and compromise all of the hard work they have put into this season.
UConn is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Providence; they will host Creighton at noon on Saturday.
The Ugly: St. John’s Regression to the Mean
Entering Big East play, the Red Storm sat at 11-1, and now they have fallen to the bottom of the pack with losses to Villanova, Xavier and Seton Hall. After their hot start, the faithful in New York were wondering why their basketball team was receiving no national attention, and their collapse in early Big East play has shown why.
Coming into the season, junior guard Posh Alexander received the honor of a Big East preseason first-team member, and – well – he hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype. Alexander has averaged 9.1 points per game, 4.5 assists per game, 2.1 steals per game while shooting a meager 35.4% from the field – all of which are career-lows.
Senior forward Joel Soriano is the only true scoring threat on the team, as he averages 15.8 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. Soriano’s inability to stretch the floor – coupled with weak guard play – has exposed the Johnnies after their success during an easy out-of-conference schedule.
We’ll see if Mike Anderson can turn around his team, but they have a tough stretch – facing off against two good teams in Marquette on Tuesday and Providence on Saturday.
